For Alice, a Kenyan living in the United States, that moment came during a visit to India.
As she explored local communities, she was captivated by the extraordinary beauty of handcrafted rugs, carpets, and textiles. Behind every intricate design was a story of remarkable skill, patience, and tradition. But what inspired her most wasn't only the craftsmanship; it was the people creating it.
She learned that many of the artisans were women and mothers, including caregivers of children with special needs, who had found flexible, meaningful work that allowed them to support their families while remaining present for those who depended on them most.
That experience planted a seed.
As an African, Alice couldn't help but think about home.
She thought about the countless mothers across Kenya and other African countries raising children on the autism spectrum, women whose days are often filled with therapy appointments, school meetings, hospital visits, advocacy, and the countless unseen moments of caregiving that come with raising a child with unique needs.
Many of these mothers possess incredible talent, resilience, and determination. Yet finding employment that accommodates the unpredictable demands of caregiving can be incredibly difficult. Too often, they're faced with an impossible choice: earning a living or being available for the child who needs them most.
Alice believed they shouldn't have to choose.
She envisioned a business that celebrated Africa's rich artistic heritage while creating flexible, dignified opportunities for mothers to earn sustainable incomes through their craftsmanship.
